1. Do some research

The first thing you should do before a shoot is to do some research regarding what kind of shots you think look cool. Think about which shots that catch your attention, why that is and how you can produce something similar.

You don‘t want to copy an exact move or shot, but you can get a lot of inspiration this way. If you know a bit of what you want out of a shoot it is way easier to nail a couple of really good shots, instead of getting a bunch of random, half-good shots.

2. Good light, background, colors

If you are with a professional photographer they know all about this, however if you are shooting with someone who does not have that much knowledge of how to get good shots you should know a bit about this.

Regarding light, mornings and evenings are really good as the light is not too bright and the sun is rather low on the horizon. And remember to have the sun behind the photographer! If you don’t want some cool silhouette shots though…

Regarding the background, try to shoot when there are less people/kiters around. The shots look MUCH better when you are the only one in the picture with an awesome, picturesque background.

If you are not getting in other cool elements that you actually would like to feature in your photos like these sheep… Adding in cool elements in your photos can add that creative touch you need in order to get your photo to stand out!

3. Think angles

Angles, angles, angles… There is SO much that can be done with good angles. Usually a professional photographer knows all about this and can create amazing shots no matter what move you’re pulling out your sleeve.

A good tip is to experiment a bit yourself with a camera and try out different angles of riders to understand how big of a difference they can actually make. Also think about this when you are researching photos. What angles and perspectives are used in the photos you find the coolest?

4. Get close to the photographer

If you are shooting with a gopro or wide-angle lens you can get amazing shots by getting super close to the camera. I usually find that the simplest of moves can look really sick, as long as you are just getting CLOSE enough!

The cool thing about this technique is that you get the rider and the kite in most photos, which usually looks amazing.

5. Simple moves

After shooting a fair bit I have found out that usually the photos come out better when I just go for simple moves. You don’t necessarily have to go for handle-passes or spin like a mofo.

In the end it’s only one moment in the trick that is captured in one photo, so you rather want to look really good in this exact moment.

If you are not shooting sequences… You can get really good shots by just doing simple tricks like a powered back-roll, railey or S-bend.

Try to keep your kite low in the powered tricks though, as you don’t want to dangle around in the pic. On the other hand, you can also get amazing shots riding hooked-in as well.

When you’re riding hooked-in you usually also have time to think about your body pose, face and even gaze into the camera. This allows for great shots, as it’s easier to create something that you have in your mind when you have more time and control in the air.

6. Grab and tweak

To nail some good shots you should learn how to grab and tweak. No, it’s not usually enough to grab to get a cool shot… A frog jump with grab is still just a frog jump with grab! ;) Learn to tweak the board to get some stylish shots! This is super easy to learn and will benefit you in most shoots.

Work on doing a hooked-in or unhooked jump, grab and then tweak. The longer you can keep the pose, the more likely you are to get the shot that you want as the photographer has more time to capture it.

7. Get inverted

Getting inverted always looks great! Being upside down always catches peoples’ attention. It captures that moment when normal people simply look at the photo in awe and wonder how on earth that is possible. And it’s pretty cool to be able to do the impossible!

8. Smile

If you are going for some of the easier and simpler moves it can look really cool if you’re smiling. You should not try to smile in all of your photos, however if there is a move that comes easy for you and you have time to think about your gaze and face – then look at the photographer and smile.

People love it when they see that the riders are having fun on the water. They are also amazed when you have enough control to pull off a crazy move and a good pose!

9. Communicate with the photographer

It is great to communicate with the photographer during the shoot. After you have taken a couple of pictures, let the photographer show you the pictures he/she thinks look great so you can see what you did good. Also give them your input of what you want. This way you are bound to get better shots than when just shooting randomly and then going through the shots later.

Keep in mind what you want, communicate it clearly and check up on the photos continuously to see if they came out the way you wanted. Be friendly and positive, as nobody likes to shoot a grumpy cat with diva vibes!

10. Have fun!

The last tip from me is to simply have fun! If you are too focused or frustrated during the shoot it is going to be shown in the photos. Conversely, if you are having fun along the way you are MUCH more likely to get some really good shots with a fun vibe in them!

Good luck!
