The best female kiteboarding video of 2017: Deep Shadows by Lidewij Hartog

Woah, now that is quite a statement to make in February so to learn more about Lidewij Hartog and our reasons for such a statement you will just have to watch the video.

Woah, now that is quite a statement to make in February so we better add an obligatory ‘so far’. Now we feel it is time to justify such a bold claim before we let you watch it.

You see we get to watch a lot of kite videos, and they all seem to share one main missing ingredient. A lack of real genuine cinematic creativity. It seems (in the authors opinion) that we have become so preoccupied with showing the world that we are able to tick tricks off a list that any real sense of ‘film-making’ goes out of the window and what we get are essentially 3 minutes lifestyle promos.

Is this because we are afraid to show the world how we see things, or we feel we must try very hard to please our audience and sponsors that the risk of less ‘likes’ due to it not being to everyone’s tastes is not a risk worth taking.

That is not to say that there are not film-makers out there changing that. We could not write these words without mentioning Noe Fonte who has come out with some very special videos recently that combine his exceptional talent and style as a rider with his talent or equal measure as a film maker.

This morning we were very pleased to learn of a new name to add to our rostrum and that is Lidewij Hartog.

Before we tell you any more about Lidewij, we think you should check out the video…

Deep Shadows

Impressed? We were. The colours, the framing, the choice of shots, THAT SONG (lookup ‘Little Ann’ – her story is also very interesting), if it sounds like we are about to start a fan club then you wouldn’t be far off.

Want to see more, well you could go and check out her Vimeo page, but we will show you her short film shot in Zanzibar a few years ago. This is a spot we know well, yet again she managed to capture it with a melancholic sense of reflection you will not often see in saturated representations of the Indian Ocean island.
